I'm your host, Priscilla Allman, and today we're going to be talking about breaking the cycle. Practical steps to stop repeating the past. Have you ever felt or have you ever found yourself in a moment where you suddenly realize I've been here before? Maybe it's the same type of conflict in a relationship, the same reaction you wish you could control, the same decision that leads to the same disappointment. And you pause to think, why do I keep repeating this? Many people carry a deep desire to grow, to change, and to move forward, but they quietly feel stuck in patterns that they don't want to repeat. But here's the hope we can hold on to today. God does not call us to stay trapped in yesterday's cycles. Through his word and his guidance, we can learn how to walk forward differently. Today we're talking about practical steps to stop repeating the past and to begin walking in the new direction God is leading in. Welcome to Purpose of Heart, the podcast, where we pause together to reflect on faith, purpose, and the quiet ways God shapes our lives through every season. All of us have parts of our story we wish would have unfolded differently. Moments we regret, habits we wish we were broken sooner, choices we wish we would have handled with more wisdom. But the beautiful truth of the gospel is this: our paths and our past do not determine our future. God's grace not only forgives, it transforms. And transformation often begins with small intentional steps guided by God's truth. Today I want to share five practical steps that can help to stop repeating the past and begin walking forward in wisdom and freedom. One of them is to acknowledge the pattern honestly. Real change begins with honest reflection. Sometimes we move so quickly through life, we never pause long enough to recognize patterns. But scripture encourages us to examine our lives. Psalm 139, verses 23 and 24 says, Search me, O God, and know my heart, try me and know my anxieties, and see if there is any wicked way in me and lead me in the way everlasting. This prayer invites God into a moment of honest self-examination. Instead of ignoring patterns, we bring them before the Lord and ask Him to reveal what we may not see clearly. Maybe the pattern involves repeated fear when new opportunities appear, repeated conflict in relationships, repeated habits that pull us away from the life we truly want to live. Awareness is not condemnation, it is the beginning of freedom. Step two is replace old thinking with God's truth. Often the behaviors that we repeat are connected to beliefs we've carried for years. Sometimes those beliefs are shaped by painful experiences. But scripture reminds us your transformation begins in the mind. Romans chapter 12, verse 2 says, and do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Renewing the mind does not mean renewing the mind, excuse me, it does mean allowing God's truth to reshape how we think. New thinking leads to new direction. Step three, slowing down before you react. One of the reasons we may repeat past patterns is because we react quickly without pausing. In moments of stress or conflict, we often fall back into familiar habits. But scripture encourages wisdom in how we respond. James 1.19 reminds us: so then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrap. That short pause between feeling and responding can change everything. Before responding, ask yourself, what response would honor God in this moment? What outcome do I want to see later? Even a few seconds of reflection can help to interrupt an old cycle and open the door to a new response. Step four is surrounding yourself with wise voices. Change rarely happens in isolation. God often uses people in our lives to help guide us towards growth. Proverbs 11:14 reminds us that in the multitude of counselors there is safety. Wise counsel may come through mentors, trusted friends, spiritual leaders, counselors. These voices help us see blind spots and encourage us when growth feels difficult. Sometimes a simple conversation with someone who cares about our spiritual well-being can bring clarity and accountability. Step five, take one small step forward. Sometimes people feel discouraged because they expect transformation to happen instantly. But lasting change often happens one step at a time. Philippians 3, 13 and 14 encourages us with these words. Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended, but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal. Notice the language of movement, forgetting what is behind, reaching forward, pressing toward the goal. Growth happens through consistent forward movement, even small steps. Maybe today that step is choosing patience in a difficult conversation, turning to prayer instead of worry, setting a boundary that protects your peace. Each step forward strengthens the new path God is helping you to build. If you've ever felt discouraged about repeating the past, I want you to hear this clearly today. Your story is not finished. God specializes in transforming lives that once felt stuck. The past may be a part of your story, but it does not have to be the direction of your future. With God's guidance, new patterns can grow, new habits can form, new wisdom can emerge. And over time, the cycles that once began to define your life begin to lose their power.
