Why the Waiting Season Feels Personal
Waiting can feel like more than a delay—it can feel deeply personal. When everyone around you seems to be moving forward while you're still praying, hoping, and wondering, it's easy to question whether God has forgotten you. But what if the waiting season isn't punishment or rejection? What if it's preparation?
In this episode of Purpose of Heart: The Podcast, Priscilla Allman explores why waiting can challenge our identity, expose our desire for control, and bring our deepest fears and insecurities to the surface. More importantly, she unpacks what God may be doing beneath the surface while you're waiting for the promise.

If you've ever asked God, where are you in this? You're in the right place. Be sure to follow the show and let's find purpose together. Hello. And welcome to Purpose of Heart, the podcast. I'm your host, Priscilla Allman, and today we're going to talk about why the waiting season feels so personal. Have you ever noticed how waiting just doesn't feel inconvenient? It feels personal. It feels like everyone else is moving. Everyone else is advancing. Everyone else is hosting the announcement. And you're still praying, still hoping, still believing, still wondering. And if we're honest, waiting doesn't just test our patience, it tests our identity. Today I want to talk about why the waiting season feels so personal and what God might actually be doing under the surface. Because what feels like delay is often deep design. Waiting feels personal because it touches what we care about the most. We don't struggle to wait for things we don't value. But when it's your calling, your marriage, your child, your healing, your promise, your job, it hits differently. Psalm 27, 14 says, wait on the Lord, be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart. Wait, I say, on the Lord. Notice something. It doesn't say waiting strengthens your schedule. It says it's he strengthens your heart. Because waiting is a heartwork. The reason it feels personal is because it is personal. God is not managing your timeline, He's forming your inner life. And strengthening the heart requires pressure. Waiting confronts the illusion of control. My mind, doesn't it? One of the hardest parts about waiting is that it exposes how little control we truly have. You can prepare, you can plan, you can pray, you can fast, you can show up consistently, you can do a whole lot of things. And still wait. Proverbs 16:9 says, A man's heart plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps. We plan, he directs. And direction often involves pauses we did not schedule. Waiting feels personal because it confronts our desire to orchestrate outcomes. It asks us, do you trust me? Even here. Not when it makes sense, not when it's predictable, but when it's unclear. And that question hits the soul. Waiting often feels like rejection, but it's refinement. Let's be honest, sometimes waiting feels like you weren't chosen. The door didn't open, the email didn't come, the opportunity went to someone else. And the enemy whispers, maybe you're not enough. But Isaiah chapter 40, verse 31 reminds us but those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength. They shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. Notice what waiting produces: renewal, elevation, endurance, stability. Waiting is not punishment, it's preparation for altitude. If you ascend too quickly without inner strength, the height will exhaust you. God would rather strengthen your capacity than rush your platform. Look at the pattern. Abraham waited decades for Isaac. Joseph waited in a prison cell before receiving a dream. David was anointed king and then sent back to the field. Waiting has always been woven into promise. Ecclesiastes 3.11 says he has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity in their hearts, except that no one can find out the work God does from beginning to end. Everything beautiful in its time. Not your time, not their time, his time. And we cannot see the full design from beginning to end, which means waiting requires humility. It requires surrender. It requires trust in God that sees what we cannot. Waiting magnifies whatever is already in your heart. If there's fear, it rises. If there's insecurity, it surfaces. If there's comparison, it intensifies. But this is not to shame you, it's to purify you. James 1:4 says, but let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. Let patience do its work. Do not rush out of the process. Don't numb it. Don't resent it. Don't quit in it. Because patience is completing something in you. Waiting is producing wholeness. We want the outcomes, right? God wants transformation. Romans 8.28 says, and we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to his purpose. All things. The delay, the silence, the unanswered prayer, the closed door, the long application cycle, the stretching, working together. Even when you can't trace it, even when it feels so, so personal. Especially when it feels personal. Because God is not just preparing what you're praying for, He's preparing you. Here's something we don't talk about enough. Waiting builds intimacy. When everything is moving quickly, we can drift into self-sufficiency. But in waiting, we lean in. Lamentations 3, 25 to 26 say the Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him. It is good that one should hope and wait quietly for the salvation of the world, of the Lord. Notice the connection. Wait, seek, hope, quiet trust. Waiting draws you into deeper relationships. And sometimes the gift isn't just the promise, it's the closeness you develop while trusting. What if waiting is protection? We rarely consider. What if the timing you want would actually crush you? What if your the door you're praying for isn't stable yet? What if God sees something ahead that you cannot? Psalm 84.11 says, For the Lord God is a son and shield. The Lord will give grace and glory. No good thing will he withhold from those who walk uprightly. No good thing. If it's being withheld, it might not be good for you yet. It's not rejection, that's protection. Waiting asks one powerful question. Is God enough before the outcome arrives? Or if the outcome arrives? Is his presence enough? Is his promise enough? Is his word enough? Because if he becomes enough in the waiting, the outcome will never be your idol. And that's freedom. You're in a waiting season right now, and it feels personal. And it feels heavy and it feels confusing. Hear this. God has not forgotten you. Your delay is not denial. Your silence is not abandonment. Your waiting is not wasting. Your strengthening is happening, the capacity is growing, the character is forming. And when the door opens, you will step into it with depth you could not have developed any other way. So today, wait with courage, wait with hope, wait with expectancy, because he is faithful and he makes everything beautiful in its time. If this encourages you today, share it with someone who is in a waiting season. And remember, the most personal seasons are the ones where God is doing his deepest work.
